About the Employer

The post is to join an existing team of three Personal Assistants to support my son who for the majority of the time is a happy and friendly 24 year old. Due to a partial chromosome deletion he has developmental delay, some communication difficulties and can exhibit challenging behaviour when he is unable to cope with frustrations and anxieties. He has a diagnosis of epilepsy and has had one seizure since 2001.

He enjoys the cinema, pub, youth club, gym, sports such as badminton, shopping, PlayStation, holidays and a variety of other leisure and social activities.

Summary of Duties

The main duties are to:


  • establish a close working relationship on a 1:1 basis and respect the family's privacy
  • support and enable him to maintain an appropriate level of personal care
  • support him in maintaining and/or developing independent life skills
  • organise and enable his participation in a  day of productive and meaningful activities
  • exercise vigilance in respect of health and safety at all times
  • make accurate and appropriate entries in any records or reports required
  • work positively and effectively with his family and others involved with him
  • to undertake any training that is considered necessary for your role and take responsibility for personal development
  • to carry out any other reasonable and relevant duties as required


My/the needs may vary from day to day and your tasks may reflect this. You could be required to perform other duties as reasonably required.

The Person They Are Looking For

The person I am looking for will be friendly, patient, committed and supportive individual with a sense of humour and a positive but firm attitude.

You will have the ability to apply common sense, initiative, enthusiasm and understanding when providing support to a young adult with special needs.

You must be willing to learn and implement the total communication approach that my son uses.

You should have a genuine interest in the provision of high quality care, be flexible towards activities and have good communication skills.

Applicants should be physically fit as my son enjoys walking, badminton etc. and also attends a gym.

You should be proactive and communicate any suggestions that could enhance my son's daily living.

Car Owner and full driving licence essential (business insurance required) you will be required to use your car to take my son out in the community. Mileage allowance will be paid.

Some knowledge of IT is preferred but is not essential.

This is a nonsmoking household someone who is a nonsmoker is preferred.

Due to the nature of the work for which you are applying, this post is subject to a satisfactory DBS disclosure (costs will be covered).

The Times Required

Sunday preferably between the hours of 9am and 6pm.


*Additional hours are available to cover annual leave and sickness of the three other Personal Assistants.


Working hours and times will be discussed at interview.
